Christianity had a huge role in bringing forward the idea of treating the masses better, as you point out. If any person can be saved and is loved by Christ then it implies that all people are of (potentially) equal worth in the eyes of God, in spite of temporary allowances for class differences and treating certain people unpleasantly, such as in harsh treatment of slave or serf. That idea of all being equal before God was powerful and I can see why it would have caught on. Also the idea of accepting misery now to gain a reward later, serving as the opiate for the suffering masses, is psychologically powerful–escapism in the face of an inability to change circumstances is very appealing and it also instils conformity which is good for societal stability. However, conformity also breads complacency and stifles innovation and material ambitions. Christianity moved away from its earlier more exultant formulation that delighted in how good God was and that the earth and man were His good creation to the more Augustinian focus on how the earth was fallen and man was evil, the latter very much in line with just trying to make it through life without being too evil and focusing on spiritual and eternal matters instead of material and practical concerns. The fall of Rome was likely the largest contribution to the stagnancy of the dark ages but the Augustinian outlook also influenced greatly as well.
