It seems to me that some % of men were motivated to be ambitious and aggressive at work in large part because they were married and had switched to a family/castle-building modality. They HAD to work their asses off because the expectation was that the man was the provider/head of household.

If you take this out of the picture for, say, 6-10 additional years, some of these guys may decide that a stripped-down, more minimalist lifestyle of relatively modest consumer spending patterns is better than an all-consuming focus on the rat race. Their courtship costs are generally quite low. Entertainment is largely computer-based. Jobs are sort of “meh”. This would be particularly true if these men were assuming they would eventually be hitched to a female breadwinner or co-breadwinner as per Lean In, and that they would never be supporting an SAHM.

On the other hand, the guys who are in fact very aggressive and ambitious on the money front may thus be taking on many of the risks and early, brutal working hours all by themselves. Their motivations are very different. If and when they achieve legit wealth, they may not have much of a shared history with anyone outside of their tribe or work team (i.e., they feel that the resources acquired are and should remain their own, since no one shared in the misery of the early building period).

Another issue of course is that by age, say, 30 you have probably become habituated to certain lifestyle fixtures and are very reluctant to give them up.

I remember being 16 and hearing guys who were my current age (42) talking about a young man who was just graduating from college. Typically the line went something like “Johnny has had his fun. Now it’s time for him to settle down.” The idea was a bit like a wild horse being brought in and successfully domesticated, quietly putting his head down and taking his place on the plow. The plow pulling was not expected to be “fun”, it was seen as rather inevitable and dignified, and perhaps even to serve as a rite of passage required to join the company of other respected men in the community.
